Formula & how it works
On the wax-weight basis, fragrance is wax × percentage. On the total-weight basis it is wax × pct ÷ (100 − pct), so the oil ends up at that percentage of the finished candle.
For a batch, wax is wax per candle × candle count first. Ounces convert at 28.35 g per oz.
Worked example
One pound of wax (454 g) at a 6% load calculated on wax weight needs 27.2 g of fragrance oil, about 0.96 oz, for a finished candle of 481 g. Using the total-weight convention instead, the same 6% calls for 29 g — a real difference, which is why the basis matters.
Getting scent load right
The supplier's number is the ceiling
Every wax has a maximum fragrance load it can actually hold, determined by the wax chemistry and published by the manufacturer. That figure, not a rule of thumb from a forum, is what belongs in the percentage field. Soy, paraffin, coconut blends, and container versus pillar waxes all differ.
More oil is not more scent
Past a wax's capacity, extra oil does not bind into the wax. It seeps out, leaving greasy patches, weeping jars, and a candle that can burn unpredictably. Throw usually peaks at or below the maximum, so overloading costs money and performance at once.
Weigh, and test the combination
Fragrance oils vary in density, so measuring by volume introduces error — a digital scale in grams is the reliable route. And because every wax, vessel, and wick interacts differently, burn-test each new pairing before selling, even when the numbers are within spec.
