Drywall Sheet Calculator

Count the sheets before the delivery, not halfway through hanging. Enter the room, pick a sheet size, and get the number to order — walls plus ceiling, with a waste margin for cuts and breakage.

Leave at 0 for a rough count — the waste margin covers small openings. Deduct only large ones.

Formula & how it works

Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height; ceiling = length × width when included. Subtract any large openings you enter.

Sheets = total area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area, rounded up.

Worked example

A 12 × 12 room, 8-ft walls: 384 ft² of wall plus a 144 ft² ceiling is 528 ft². With 10% waste that's about 581 ft²; at 32 ft² per 4×8 sheet, round up to 19 sheets.

Ordering drywall

Fewer seams, or easier handling

Twelve-foot sheets span most walls in one piece, cutting the taping and giving a flatter wall, but they're heavy and awkward in a small room or up stairs. Match the sheet length to your access and how many hands you have.

Order a little long

Corners, cutouts, and the odd cracked sheet all eat into a tight count. A 10–15% margin usually covers it; bump it up for a room full of windows and angles where offcuts pile up.
