Formula & how it works
Wax and fragrance are converted to a cost per gram (1 lb = 453.59 g, 1 oz = 28.35 g) and multiplied by the grams used. Materials are that plus vessel, wick, label, and packaging. Labor is rate × minutes ÷ 60.
Unit cost is materials plus labor; batch total is unit × batch size. With a price entered, gross profit is price − unit cost, margin is profit ÷ price, and markup is profit ÷ cost.
Worked example
Wax at $4.50/lb using 200 g costs $1.98. Fragrance at $2.00/oz using 16 g adds $1.13. With a $2.25 vessel, $0.15 wick, $0.30 label, and $0.75 packaging, materials come to $6.56. Six minutes at $20/hour adds $2.00, so the true unit cost is $8.56 — and a batch of 12 costs $102.76. Priced at $18, that is $9.44 gross profit, a 52% margin.
Costing a candle honestly
Labor is not free
The most common mistake in handmade pricing is treating your own time as costless. Pouring, wicking, labeling, and cleanup add up, and a business that ignores them looks profitable right until it scales. Putting even a modest hourly rate against the minutes per candle turns a hobby number into a business one.
The small parts add up
Wax gets the attention, but vessels, wicks, labels, warning stickers, boxes, and filler often exceed the wax cost. Counting each one per candle keeps you from discovering at the end of a quarter that packaging quietly ate the margin.
Margin versus markup
These two get confused constantly. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price, while markup is profit as a share of cost — the same candle can show a 52% margin and a 110% markup. Knowing which one a wholesale buyer or marketplace means keeps your pricing conversations straight.
