Mix feed the accurate way — by weight. Choose 1:1, 2:1, or a custom ratio, then start from the water you plan to use or the sugar you have on hand, and get both amounts plus the approximate finished volume.
One liter of water weighs one kilogram, so water is the same number either way.
Formula & how it works
Ratios here are by weight. Starting from water, sugar = water × ratio; starting from sugar, water = sugar ÷ ratio. Water converts one-to-one between kilograms and liters.
Finished volume is approximate: dissolved sugar adds roughly its own volume at a density near 1.59 g/cm³, so volume ≈ water + sugar ÷ 1.59.
Worked example
For a 1:1 spring feed using 4 liters of water, you need 4 kg of sugar, yielding roughly 6.5 liters of syrup. Switch to a 2:1 autumn feed with the same water and it takes 8 kg of sugar for about 9 liters. Working from stock instead, 10 lb of sugar at 2:1 pairs with about 2.3 liters of water.

Thin in spring, thick in autumn
Thin 1:1 syrup resembles incoming nectar and encourages the queen to lay and the colony to draw comb, which suits early-season build-up. Thick 2:1 gives more sugar per trip with less water for the bees to evaporate, so it stores efficiently as winter provisions late in the year.
Weight beats volume
Because sugar is far denser than water, "equal parts" means different things by weight and by volume. Mixing by weight gives a consistent, repeatable feed, and since a liter of water conveniently weighs a kilogram, only the sugar really needs the scale.
Keep syrup out of the honey
Feeding while honey supers are on risks syrup being stored and extracted as honey, which it is not. Remove supers before feeding, and be mindful that open feeding can trigger robbing between colonies — entrance or internal feeders are usually the calmer choice.
